PEEK Launches Winter Warmer Appeal to Tackle Child Poverty in Glasgow in Partnership with Hub West Scotland.
As temperatures drop, children across Glasgow face a harsh reality: too many are growing up without the warm clothing they need to play, learn, and thrive. This winter, we’re launching our annual Winter Warmer Appeal, in partnership with Hub West Scotland, to provide essential warm clothing and comfort items for children most affected by poverty.
Across Glasgow, one in four children (26%) are growing up in relative poverty, meaning their families earn less than 60% of the average UK income after housing costs.
The causes are complex, from unemployment, disability, and language barriers to the rising cost of living, but the consequences are simple and stark. As the winter months approach, countless children are unable to enjoy the simple joy of outdoor play because they lack a warm jacket, waterproof shoes or even hats and gloves to keep them warm. This isn’t just about comfort; it’s about children’s physical, emotional, and social development.
The cost-of-living crisis has continued to deepen existing inequalities, especially for low-income families.
Families across Glasgow are under enormous strain, choosing between heating, eating, and clothing their children appropriately for winter. Modern-day pressures of Christmas gifts, and even warm coats, wellies, blankets, and thermal layers, are not something families can always afford. With your support, we can alleviate some of the pressures and help to ensure children and young people are cosy and warm this Winter and have the chance to play outside in all weathers.
Hub West CEO, Iain Marley, said, "The generosity shown through the Winter Warmer Appeal is a powerful reminder of the compassion that exists across our communities. Hub West is proud to support PEEK’s vital work, which continues to bring comfort, dignity, and opportunity to so many."
Through our Winter Warmer Appeal, we aim to deliver hundreds of warm clothing items to families across the city, ensuring that children can continue to play outdoors, stay active, and remain connected with their communities throughout the coldest months.
